Sharon Onyema serves as the E-Communications Assistant at the African Public Relations Association (APRA), where she plays a pivotal role in shaping and amplifying the association’s online presence and messaging. With a first-class honours Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Covenant University, Ota, Sharon leverages her academic foundation to craft strategic communication that fosters cross-cultural understanding and advances APRA’s mission of strengthening international communication across the African continent.
Sharon’s passion for sustainable development policies and African politics has been evident throughout her career. In 2021, Sharon conducted research on food security, culminating in her thesis titled “Food Security and Sustainable Development Goal 2: The Role of Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture (2015–2020).” This research sparked a collaboration with Izanu Africa, where she contributed to designing economic systems for African smallholder farmers to address food insecurity. Her work with Izanu Africa and FSD Africa helped her hone skills in sustainable development, which she now applies at APRA to inform and craft strategies that resonate with diverse audiences.
Beyond her professional achievements, Sharon is deeply committed to community service. She volunteers with SOWIPHANS (Society for Widows and Orphans) and FLO Haven, an NGO dedicated to addressing period poverty in Nigeria. Through these engagements, she has developed strong leadership skills while making a positive impact on the communities she serves. Since joining APRA, Sharon has been instrumental in the successful planning of APRA conferences in Zambia (2023) and Cote d’Ivoire (2024). Her role at APRA allows her to craft strategies that foster cross-cultural relations, facilitate global partnerships, and elevate the African narrative on the world stage
The African Public Relations Association (APRA) is the successor organisation to the Federation of African Public Relations Associations (FAPRA) that was inaugurated in 1975 in Nairobi Kenya to foster unity via interaction and exchange of ideas amongst public relations practitioners in Africa as a whole.
